The Yas Viceroy Hotel

The Yas Viceroy Hotel: Making a Name for Itself in Abu Dhabi

Yas Island is the chosen site for Aldar Properties’ $36 billion development project. Located in Abu Dhabi, Yas Island has a land area of 2,500 hectares with 1,700 hectares of the total area being claimed for development. Among the attractions in Yas Island include the Yas Viceroy Hotel, the Yas Island Circuit and the Ferrari World Theme Park. Aside from tourist attractions, Yas Island is also known for luxury accommodations, more specifically, the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel. This Yas hotel has made a name for itself in Abu Dhabi by becoming a landmark in Yas Marina and provides tourists a truly unique experience.

A History of the Yas Viceroy Hotel

One feature that makes this Yas hotel unique in itself is it is built across the Formula 1™ race track located in the Yas Marina Circuit. It is the first of its kind in the world and was designed by Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid of Asymptote Architecture, an architectural office based in New York. The Yas hotel is composed of two 12-storey towers, with one tower located within the race circuit of the Yas Marina and the other set in the Marina itself. A Grid Shell structure and monocoque glass and steel bridge connects the two towers together crossing up and over the Formula 1™ race track in the Yas Marina Circuit.

A Closer Look at Yas Viceroy Hotel’s Design

Asymptote created the 5-star Yas Island hotel as a landmark symbolizing key influences in ancient Islamic art and Islam craft practices. The Grid Shell, a curvilinear covering made of steel and glass, provides the hotel’s main feature and holds the most significance in terms of architecture and engineering. The Grid Shell utilizes an LED lighting system with video feeds transmitted over 5,096 diamond-shaped, pivoting, color-changing LED panes. The shell can be seen from a far distance, giving the appearance of an atmospheric-like veil to the hotel’s two towers. On the inside, the Grid Shell highlights the Yas hotel’s modern interiors designed by Richardson Sadeki and Jestico + Whiles. The lobby showcases a contemporary interpretation of Arabian mashrabiya, with well-defined private zones provided by lightweight white latticed walls. As a contrast to the walls, the hotel upholstery is in shades of indigo and deep purple which provides a natural feel thanks to the use of pigmented stains and colors.
